Student Records/Transcripts
Student records are confidential and accessible only to the individual student, Administration, Faculty or Education Department officials. Any student desiring to review his or her file must notify the school in writing. The student will receive a copy of their unofficial transcript upon completion of the program. Students interested in obtaining official or unofficial transcripts should contact the Education Department to obtain a Request for Transcript form. Official transcripts can only be mailed to another institution and unofficial transcripts will be mailed directly to the student. All transcripts are $5.00 each. NYIM reserves the right to withhold an official transcript if the student’s financial obligation to the school is not met, if the student is in arrears on any federal or state student loan obligation, or if class, clinic, or community service time is still owed to the school.
State Board Review
State Board Review is a separate course offered prior to the State Board Exam. There is no charge for NYIM graduates. The reviews are held on the Saturdays and Sundays before the State Board Exam. The objective of the review is to raise awareness where additional study is required. The State Board Exam is offered in January and August. Licensing and Certification NYIM’s training is recognized by the New York State Education Department. Graduates are eligible to sit for the State Exam and are also eligible to sit for the National Certification Exam for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork. To be eligible to sit for these exams the candidate must pay a fee as determined by the licensing organizations. New York law requires a license to practice massage therapy. The State Board Exam is offered in January and August. Students are not to practice massage for profit until they are licensed. Any student practicing massage for profit before graduation from NYIM training and/or without being licensed may be subject to termination from the program and will be reported to the New York State Office of Professional Misconduct.
Provisional Licensing
Graduates who wish to practice before taking the State Board Exam may secure a provisional license through the state by arranging for a Licensed Massage Therapist to supervise them. Before a provisional license is granted, all graduation requirements must be fulfilled. Candidates must be 18 years of age to meet the eligibility requirements of the New York State exam.
Employment Information
NYIM provides employment and placement assistance for graduates. NYIM does not, however, guarantee employment. Many chiropractors, acupuncturists, sports clinics, health clubs, and day spas are interested in having Licensed Massage Therapists working with them. Job Placement is designed to guide and link graduates in good standing with prospective employers and job openings. To remain in the Job Placement Program, graduates accept responsibility to communicate and comply with Policies and Procedures of the Job Placement Program. Graduates can be terminated from the program for failure to comply with Policies and Procedures. Examples include failure to go to interviews, excessive terminations from employment, failure to communicate and/or submit all necessary documentation or unprofessional conduct as a Licensed Massage Therapist.
