The Massage Therapy Program
What is massage therapy? The practice of the profession of massage is defined
as engaging in applying a scientific system of activity to the muscular
structure of the human body by means of stroking, kneading, tapping, and
vibrating with the hands or vibrators for the purpose of improving muscle tone
and circulation.
Objectives
The overall goals for the Massage Therapy Program are to assist each
student in gaining entry level knowledge of the human body and technical skills
as a massage therapist.
- The student will show proficiency and confidence in classic and contemporary
massage techniques.
- The student will have a practical knowledge of oriental bodywork theory and
application.
- The student will have a practical knowledge of anatomy and physiology and its
relationship to massage therapy.
- The student will have practical experience with several specialized areas of
massage therapy.
- The student will have experience with state of the art computer technology
for operations in Student Clinic and later in their practice.
- The student will participate in community service activities and marketing of
themselves as massage therapists.
- The student will be aware of the range of employment possibilities and shall
have an opportunity to achieve personal goals.
- The student will have the knowledge to converse with, receive and make
referrals to other health professionals. Completion of the Massage program at
NYIM will fulfill requirements for graduates to sit for the New York State
licensing exam for the practice of massage therapy and the National
Certification Boards.
Program Options
- Full-time (48 week course) 5 days per week, 4.5 hours per day, plus 60 clinic
hours
- Part-time (96 week course) 2-3 days per week, 4.5 hours per day, plus 60
clinic hours.
Additional community service hours are required.
Class Times & Days
Classes are offered at 3 convenient times:
- AM Monday – Friday, 8:00 A.M. to 12:30 P.M.
- PM Monday – Friday, 1:00 P.M. to 5:30 P.M.
- EVE Monday – Friday, 6:00 P.M. to 10:30 P.M.
New terms begin approximately every twelve weeks. NYIM reserves the right to
add or cancel any class start date or session it deems necessary. Every
consideration will be given to students, assisting in their enrollment in an
alternate session or date, as enrollment space permits.
Listed below are term start/end dates for this edition of the program
catalog:
- 07/19/10 — 10/07/10
- 10/18/10 — 01/17/11
- 01/24/11 — 04/13/11
- 04/18/11 — 07/08/11
Start dates and breaks are subject to change due to weather conditions or any
other extenuating circumstances. Breaks are given between most terms and range
from 2-5 class days.
Courses are separated into four (4) twelve-week terms. All students will
begin their course work by taking Anatomy & Physiology. Full-time students will
also take Introduction to Massage; part-time students will take Introduction to
Massage upon completion of Anatomy and Physiology. After passing Anatomy &
Physiology and Introduction to Massage, the student then enters term B, C or D,
classes that are taught on a rotating basis. The maximum student/faculty ratio
for lectures is 60:1; for clinic and other hands-on training it is 20:1.
Holidays
New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving
Day, day after Thanksgiving, Christmas Day. Students who wish to observe other
religious holidays should notify the Administration for special arrangements.
School Hours
School hours are from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM. NYIM classrooms are open from 8:00
a.m. to 10:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Clinic hours are Monday through
Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. (subject to change). The Administrative
offices are open from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. NYIM
reserves the right to close the school and student clinic when deemed necessary.
Facilities
NYIM’s facilities include clinical and instructional rooms, administrative
offices, a student lounge, a faculty office, reception area, computer lab,
bookstore, library, laundry area, kitchenette, conference room, and a lecture
hall that can accommodate up to sixty participants. The Student Clinic, open to
the public Monday through Saturday (subject to change) has six private rooms
with massage tables, adjustable lighting, and related massage supplies. Located
next to a major shopping mall with ample complementary parking, NYIM affords its
students the best of Western New York’s hospitality and attractions.
